Energy Education

4 - 12 School Education Programs

CCI’s energy education and outreach programs are designed to increase awareness of the various types and sources of energy, how those sources are produced and ultimately how they are used in homes and buildings. These programs also explore the ways in which energy is wasted and how we can reduce that waste to save money and mitigate the environmental impacts that result. CCI’s Building as a Teaching Tool program offers visitors to the CCI Center a tour and demonstrations that show how a 100+ year old building was retrofitted to a state of the art Gold LEED (EB) facility that uses only 40% of the energy of a similarly sized building. Testimonials

Our program youth are extremely lucky to have CCI as a resource.  SCA crews have taken advantage of green building tours as well as weatherization and efficiency workshops with CCI.  They have also been guests on Green Education Sampler field trips, where they received the chance to travel to area green “hot spots” and learn about local green businesses and initiatives.  All of the opportunities provided by CCI have been valuable, well-planned learning experiences.  Conservation Consultants, Inc. (and in particular Education Specialist Indigo Raffel) has been a supportive partner to us in reaching our goal of providing conservation education and for our youth.

CCI Center came to Highmark a couple of years ago to help us celebrate Earth Day.  They engaged a group of our employees about how to implement energy efficiency projects at home.  Our employee feedback was very positive because they learned easy ways to save money by conserving energy. Highmark employees continue to be enthusiastic about learning innovative ways to conserve energy at home and in the workplace.

CCI has been a favorite trip of fourth graders for years.  Using the trip to CCI as a jumping off point for our Built Environment unit is powerful and meaningful for our students.  They see an authentic example green building and the ways they can incorporate green strategies in their homes.  As we brainstorm Energy Impact projects, students always reference their experience at CCI and information their staff has shared at our energy expert panel.  CCI also helped us launch our rooftop garden project!

City Charter High School is proud to partner with Conservation Consultants Inc. as one of our established host sites for our internship program.  Under the direct mentorship of Ms. Indigo Raffel, we have placed several students at this site and Indigo has created an individual learning plan based on each student’s particular interests.  Each of our student placements has been successful, and each student has walked away from this learning experience with valuable practice in workplace skills.
